Campus Ministry
In light of my own story, I think in many ways, I am my own best example of why campus ministry is so important. God used the ministry of Cru to impact my life in a major way, and I want to make that possible for other students. Here's a small snapshot of what that looks like:
Who:
I have the privilege of working with a multinational team of staff and interns as a part of Campus für Christus, the German ministry of Cru.
What:
My team and I are working to build spiritual movements among the 180,000+ students at the Freie Universität, Technische Universität, Humboldt Universität and other higher education institutions in Berlin. On a daily basis, that involves leading Bible Studies, mentoring students, meeting with students on campus to talk with them about the Gospel, organizing retreats, going to conferences. Many of these things often take place over a good cup of coffee at the university or elsewhere in the city.
Where:
Berlin! I spend most of my time at Humboldt University, but am on the campuses of our other universities every now and then as well.
When:
I was in Berlin from September 2008-August 2010 on a short-term program called STINT (Short-Term INTernational). Since 2011, I've been back in Berlin as longterm international staff.
Why:
To give every student in Berlin a chance to know someone who truly follows Christ. The simple answer to the Why is because Jesus commanded it, and because He delights in letting us take part in His grand plan of salvation. Shortly before He left His disciples, Jesus told His disciples to "go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." (Matthew 28:19)
The apostle Paul put it this way in his letter to the church in Rome:
"But what does it say? 'The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,' that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, 'Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.' For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, 'Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'" (Romans 10:8-13)
