As I set off on the last leg of my latest cross-country road trip on Friday, I flipped on the Christian XM station looking for something to lift my heart, which was deeply sad and worn particularly thin from a long string of goodbyes over the past several days. A new song that I hadn't hear before came on: Royal Taylor's "Hold Me Together." I picked up the chorus easily and sang along with him the second time through, "Can you hold me together? Can your love reach down this far? Can you hold me together? 'Cause without you holding my heart, I'm falling apart." By the end, I was belting it out the words like I had been singing them for years, my heart crying out to the Lord with that repeated question, "Can you hold me together?"
The song wound down and I was still mouthing the words, softly begging Jesus for an answer. "Please? Can you hold me together?" The title of the next song popped up on my radio and tears welled up in my eyes immediately--"I Am."
